Rapid movement of Latvia towards information society is possible only in the environment of free flow of information and unlimited availability of knowledge. Latvian libraries, information centres and other institutions have accumulated huge bulk of organized knowledge both in the form of traditional catalogues and card files, as well as databases, but these resources are not investigated and included in the circulation of information. It is impossible to employ them, in order every patron is provided with public access to information resources. In the information society with constant growth of scope and type of information sources, the role of libraries and other informational institutions in providing informational services also increases. In order to provide operative and quality services and to create basis for providing universal informational service, foreseen by National program “Informatics” and State Integrated Library Information System Conception it is essential to investigate the sources of information, as well as their availability and exploitation. Information society enters the library with the preparation of the flow of information and provision of free access, therefore in order to solve the problem-situation, one must investigate and provide access to all resources of bibliographic information in Latvia, which are at the disposal of libraries, information centers and other institutions. |
